Saving YouTube video as a video file on your computer

Today, many websites that allow you to enter the URL of the video you want to save to your computer and get a link to download the video file. Below is a simple four-step process to download any YouTube video.

Note

These steps may not work if at a school or job that's blocking YouTube.

1. First, go to the YouTube page containing the video you want to download. When you've found the page, press Ctrl+L on your keyboard to highlight the text in the address bar, and then Ctrl+C to copy the Internet address. If you are on an Apple computer substitute Ctrl with the Command key.

2. Once this address is copied, paste that address into the text field below by clicking inside the box and pressing Ctrl+V on your keyboard. Then, click the Download Video button.

Note

If the text field or Download Video button above is not visible or clickable, you can also type savefrom.net/ in front of any YouTube address.

3. Click the download video in browser link, below the green 'Download the app and get your video' box. If you don't see that link immediately, wait 10 to 15 seconds. It will be located to the right of the video you want to download.

Note

Using the 'download video in browser' link will allow you to download a YouTube video for free. Ignore any advertisements that say you need to pay money to download a video. You do not need to purchase or install an app to download the YouTube video.

4. If done properly, below the link mentioned above, you will see a preview of the video (as shown below), along with a green Download button and the video format.

Click the down arrow on the right side of the Download box to see additional video formats, such as MP4, WebM, or 3GP. There may also be more than one quality option for each video format. Select the video format you want and click the green Download button.

Tip

Also, if available in the list, the 'MP4 360' video option will open a new browser window to play the video. Right-click on the video in the new browser window and select Save video as to download and save the MP4 video file.

Note

Currently, YouTube does not allow for the download of HD quality video, so the 'Full HD' video option will not work.

After the video is downloaded, the video file will be available in your downloads folder.

You cannot download private videos because the YouTube download service would not have the necessary rights to access the video.

If after following the above steps, you do not get a preview like our example, make sure that the link you are using works by opening the page in a new window. Once verified as working, try the above steps again. If the steps continue not to work, try refreshing this page by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard and following the above steps again. It is only saving as audio and not video

Make sure you are choosing the 'MP4 360p' or 'MP4 480p' option from the download link. If you choose 'Audio MP4 128,' it only downloads the audio and not the video. If you did choose the right download link to download the file, it is very likely that the player you are using does not have the necessary codec for video files. Download the free VLC player for your computer and try to play the video file from within VLC and not the player you are currently using.

1. Link to Any Part of a Video

Typically, when you copy a link to a YouTube video, it starts from the beginning. If you want to show someone just a bit of a video or skip a lengthy intro, you can append a time stamp to the URL to start it at that time.

You can do this in a couple of ways. By manually adding &t=YmXXs to the end of a video URL, you’ll set it to start Y minutes and XX seconds into the video. You can omit minutes, or use only seconds, such as 90s for a minute and a half. So this video:

2. Loop a Video Infinitely

You can tweak the playback using the options below the video if you want to start or end at different points. To do this without changing the URL, just right-click any YouTube video and toggle Loop on.

3. Bypass Age Restrictions

YouTube has age restrictions on certain videos that are flagged as containing mature content. Whether you don’t have a YouTube account or don’t feel like signing in to watch one, you can perform a little trick to bypass the sign-in.

Take a YouTube URL for a restricted video like this:

Simply append gen in front of youtube as shown here:

The video will open on a new page that features no age restriction.

4. Skip a Certain Amount of the Intro

Similar to the trick that lets you pick the start time, you can also choose to skip a certain number of seconds at the start of the video. You can’t specify minutes with this one, so use 90 (seconds) for a minute and a half.

So, to skip the first 30 seconds of this video:

This is similar to the timing one but is a bit faster to type and doesn’t require you to remember a certain time stamp.

5. Claim a Custom YouTube Channel URL

If you have your own YouTube channel and meet certain requirements, you can set a vanity URL for your page. This is much easier to remember than the default random string of characters, so it’s worth doing for easier linking.

To get a custom URL, your channel needs to meet the following criteria:

• Have at least 100 subscribers
• Be at least 30 days old
• Have an uploaded profile photo and channel art

If you satisfy these, head to YouTube’s Advanced settings page by clicking the gear in the top-right, choosing Settings, and clicking Advanced settings on the left. Here under Channel settings, you’ll see the text You’re eligible for a custom URL if that’s the case. Click the link next to this and proceed through the steps to create a custom URL and confirm the terms of use.

Once your custom URL is set up, anyone can head to youtube.com/[YourCustomURL] to visit your channel. Note that you can only have one custom URL at a time. You can’t change it, but you’re allowed to remove your current URL and create a new one, if it’s available.

6. Check Out YouTube TV

YouTube TV is an interface designed for smart TVs and apps on consoles. It’s still YouTube, but with less clutter and a few shortcuts that are easier for remotes. You probably won’t want to make this your main YouTube interface, but it’s worth checking out for a cleaner look.

    or FLV, or 3GPP

    • The youtube link you pasted is incorrect. Do you think that may be the problem? On the url, where it says 'www.youtube.com/watch?tv' take out the 't' in 'tv'.

    &flip=1 does not work anymore, and even if it did, copyrighted works can be edited to be a little faster/slower then the normal speed in order to avoid the auto detect service. I have never seen it to be flipped just to avoid it.

    For ubuntu, simply run 'sudo aptitude install youtube-dl'

    And you'll be able to download YouTube videos from the command line!

    • It can't be done. I have already said so in the comments above. If you post a link, it will have to be typed into the browser later, so it is not even effective to use as a marketing method. Unless you mass spam a lot of videos.

      (And for that you would need a software like tubetoolbox or similar. I don't want you to even try that, cause I get enough spam on my videos!)

      Anyway, you can post a simple 'example[.]com' post on videos though and get around the YouTube filters.

      I am a Partner, so I have a few extra tools that others do not get.

65. While &fmt=22 does allow for a higher resolution video, it only works if there's an option to view the video in HD (such as when there's an HD button in the video). Otherwise, it doesn't give you any better quality on regular videos. The &fmt=18 works for all videos. 149. If you use Safari, the easiest way to download youtube videos is to do the following:

     1. Go to the youtube video of your choice on youtube.com
     2. Click on 'Window' in the menu, and select 'Activity'
     3. Under the youtube address, which will be recognisable by its name, double click on the address with the largest file listed (it should be the only one in the megabytes, but the size varies depending on length of video)
     4. A new window should open and, after a few seconds, the video should begin to download to your computer

     Note: You may need to use a program to convert the file into a watchable movie file. My computer used to not recognise the file at all until converted, but for some reason it's recently started downloading them as flash video files (.flv).

     • If the computer does not recognize the file type, right click on it and select Properties and after the name, append .flv. Like this.

       and then press ok. Now they will work in a flash player and your computer will recognize them.

     • use VLC player it will play all most every video file format even not recognize once. It is free. and uses less cpu.

       I think you have an idea that YT should only be used for 'browsing' and that other users use it the same way you do. Not true. Many are using it as a blog friendly hosting platform for specific embedded content, or to share content within a specific group - not necessarily of public interest or consumption.

       That said, you can still visit YouTube directly and watch the video - and get your search box, lower quality and related videos - so no harm done to someone like you who surfs. But I don't want related videos to pop up on an embedded video from our Agriculture Dept on 'sexing chicks' that gets embedded on a HS webpage. And yes, this is a real example - it means to separate out the hens from the roosters early on.
